What is SWP (Systematic Withdrawal Plan)?
SWP lets you withdraw a fixed amount from your mutual fund investment at regular intervals. Your remaining corpus continues to earn returns, making it an efficient way to generate regular income from investments — ideal for retirees or anyone seeking passive income.
The 4% Safe Withdrawal Rule
Financial experts suggest withdrawing no more than 4% of your corpus annually to ensure it lasts 25-30 years. For Indian markets with typically higher returns and inflation, a 5-6% withdrawal rate may work, but it depends on your investment mix and market conditions.
SWP vs FD Interest
Unlike FD interest which is fully taxable as income, SWP withdrawals from equity mutual funds held over 1 year benefit from long-term capital gains tax at 12.5% (above ₹1.25 lakh/year). This makes SWP more tax-efficient for generating regular income compared to traditional FDs.
